We have attached copies of correspondence between Royal Mail Director of Employee Relations Jonathan Millidge and the Union. Royal Mail has given Mr Millidge's letter wide circulation. Please feel free to circulate the Union's response.
The plain truth is Royal Mail printed 170,000 copies of their pension proposal. This represented a savage attack on the pension arrangements of both existing and new employees. The fact that Royal Mail have now confirmed that the proposal has been discarded should not mislead any CWU members. The company remain determined to introduce inferior pension arrangements for all employees.
The CWU position is clear. Pensions remain one of the core issues in our dispute. We are insisting on direct negotiations and agreement with the company on any forthcoming proposals that change existing arrangements.
The Union remains committed to securing a first class defined benefits scheme, open to all members, protecting existing entitlements, including the right to retire at 60. We believe that an agreement on this basis is possible if both parties remain open minded.
In due course we will be sending more detailed information on pensions direct to members' home addresses.
In the meantime, any enquiries on the content of this LTB should be directed to Ray Ellis's office, quoting reference PTC/RE/dj/024.
