On the 5th September an aid convoy organised by CWU comprising ten vehicles of medical, clothing, food and other aid will leave Hull destined for orphanages, hospitals and schools in Bulgaria.
14 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU UK), who are employees of BT and Royal Mail, will be joined by four members of the Irish CWU who work for Eircom and An Post, along with two solicitors from Simpson Millar. They will be driving vehicles loaned from BT, Royal Mail, An Post and Eircom and will be delivering over £250,000 of aid in which 95% includes new medical equipment, incubators, clothing, shoes, bedding, cots, nappies, sanitary towels, school desks, furniture, cleaning materials, food, weight gain products.
The convoy has been organised by CWU Humanitarian Aid (CWUHA) who have with the help of the Communication Workers Union, Royal Mail and BT been helping needy children in the UK, Eastern Europe and Africa for the last 13 years.
Carl Webb, CWUHA National Secretary said: “This is a truly historic event with union members from Ireland, and the UK working together with their employers, putting aside any industrial differences, for the benefit of needy children. This is corporate social responsibility at its best.”
The CWUHA will be working with two local NGOs and delivering the aid direct to the place of need. Fund raising events have taken place all over the country from body waxes to running the Manchester 10k run, alongside many companies and trade unions who have donated money to help purchase the aid requested.
